  • A dental specialty is an area of dentistry that has been formally recognized by the ADA’s National Commission. These specialties have their own regulatory boards, but generally require advanced study beyond a DMD or DDS degree.

    Currently there are 12 dental specialties recognized by the National Commission: Dental Anesthesiology, Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics & Prosthodontics.
